It is hard to have a successful business these days without a website. Customers expect to be able to find information about your company on the web. Web Site Design Do's and Don'ts Print E-mail

Marketing your product or service in the digital world mirrors that of the non-digital world in many ways. Think of your initial website as a brochure that describes your company. Always answer these questions on your site:

  • Who - Who are you as individuals and as a company?
  • What - What products or services do you offer? Give an accurate description of each. Do not sell your customer short by not providing enough information but at the same time do not hesitate to bullet point key ideas.
  • When - When are your hours of operation? Include how long you've been in business if it is relevant to your industry and will help sell your company.
  • Where - Where is your business located? Where can your products or services be obtained?
  • Why - Why do you do business? Why choose your company over a competitor?

Business Info...

Web Site Business Practices

OwnYourOwnWebsite.com - Think of your website as an extension of your current business practices. The web may even reshape some of your procedures and/or make them more efficient. Internal functions, such as order processing and report generation, should be integrated into the website if it makes business sense. If you have a database of products or customers, why not integrate it into your website with a user-friendly interface. This would allow you to send emails to all of your customers about products and/or service offerings. Although it may cost more initially to put this information online, the overall savings from having two or more separate systems are immeasurable. The integration process may require you to re-think or change certain business processes, but improving efficiency is one of the best ways for your small business to stay ahead of your competition.

Measuring Sit'e Effectiveness

OYOW.com - Ultimately, a site with people visiting it (traffic) is successful, and one without it is useless. Statistics that show where your visitors are coming from will give you information on what key words are used to find your site. This information can then be used to further optimize your website and see direct relationships between changes you make and the amount of traffic you receive. A good web design and marketing plan needs this analysis and ongoing recalibration. For a small business this is less intense than a huge one, but it is still vital. I would recommend having an SEO company provide this step for you.

Keep it Short...

Keep Your Domain Name Short!

The shorter, the better. It’s best to keep your domain name less than 15 characters if possible. A shorter name is easier for people to remember and it also reduces the likelihood that your visitor will mistype it or spell it wrong. For example, YourStore.com has a lot less chance of being mistyped than isellthisstuffsobuyitfrommenow.com.

Keep it Sweet...

Keep Your Domain Name Sweet.

The more memorable the name, the easier it is for people to remember. You can have the best site in the world, but if people can’t remember your domain name it will cut down on your return visitors. It’s hard enough to get traffic on the web without “losing” visitors that want to come back but can’t find you.

Keep it Simple...

Keep Your Domain Name Simple!

Make sure the domain name is easy for people to spell. Don't spell words unusually. Unless you have incredible branding, people will type in the common spelling of your domain and your competition will get visitors who were looking for you. For example, LeftRight.com is much better than LefRite.com
